The Top 10 Tips should help anyone to get started, just as I did, but without making many of the mistakes I made. Finding well-trained therapists and brilliant places where people are genuinely caring and mindful in what they are doing with their expertise is a joy. I found that looking after my inner well-being helped improve my health. And it has also helped me to be better out in the world dealing with people and challenges day-to-day.
A therapy is anything that helps you feel better or grow stronger, that relieves or heals a disorder – usually after an illness. That’s quite a broad definition!
1. Today’s demanding lifestyles mean that most of us are increasingly worried about balancing daily stress with relaxation, exercise – and therapy.
2. Self-care is a vast and growing industry so it’s important to arm yourself with knowledge before you sign up for anything. (see my therapy tour for 37 types)
3. If you’re not sure where to start, check with your GP, especially if you’re thinking of trying more extreme therapies like colonic irrigation.
4. Whether you’re a regular or have never tried a single one, the best place to check out therapy options is online. It will give you an idea of the range of options on offer, what’s involved and how much it costs.
5. But beware. There are many videos to watch showing therapies and therapists in action, of yoga ‘teachers’ demonstrating this or that style. Remember, not all will be equally well-trained.
6. If you want to be sure, check with recognized institutions or organizations that are responsible for training standards and certification. e.g. Yoga Alliance USA, Council for Homeopathy.
7. It’s not just about selecting the right therapy for your wellbeing, you should also try different practitioners. Each therapist is unique. They will have learned a specific technique and adapted it to their own personal style. Many are wonderful. One will be right for you.
8. Hypnosis can be good for heartbreak. Well-qualified hypnotherapists can help you move on by replacing feelings of emptiness or low self-esteem with more positive emotions.
9. If I was asked where someone should start, I’d say massage. It’s great for calming anxiety, easing tense muscles and giving you a complete break from the pressures of the day.
10. For me, Yoga is the best therapy for all-round good health. It not only gently exercises your body physically, but it also helps with mental focus – and spiritual nourishment too. Try different classes before committing to a course as each teacher has their own style.
BONUS TIP! Have fun! It’s not all serious and you can share wonderful experiences with friends if you go off on a retreat, get away from it all for a few days or even a week, perhaps even take a trip abroad.
